Who’s Still in the Hunt?
On the flip side, we’ve got some serious contenders. Gujarat Titans, the IPL 2022 champs, are absolutely crushing it—they were the first to lock in a playoff spot. Right behind them are Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings, both of whom have shown grit and consistency this season. And then, things get spicy.
Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are hanging on by a thread. Only one playoff spot is left, and both teams are eyeing it like it’s the last samosa at a party.
How Do Teams Advance to the IPL 2025 Playoffs?
It’s pretty straight-forward. After all 70 league matches are played, the top four teams in the points table qualify for the playoffs.
Now for the not-so-simple part. If two or more teams are level on points, the Net Run Rate (NRR) is how we decide who ends higher. And you don’t just want to win, you want to win by as many runs as possible.
So runs count. Every. Single. Run.
What is the Playoff Format?
In basic outline:
Qualifier 1: 1st place vs 2nd place — winner moves straight to final.
Eliminator: 3rd place vs 4th place — loser heads home.
Qualifier 2: loser Qualifier 1 vs winner Eliminator — winner moves to final.
And then? The big one. Finals. Winner takes all. Glory, bragging rights, memes—you name it.

Who Holds the IPL Playoffs Record?
This is for the trivia buffs.
The Chennai Super Kings have been to the playoffs on 12 of their 18 seasons. That’s insane. CSK have played 26 playoff matches and have won 17 of them. Call it a day for the haters this year—they are still GOATs.
The Mumbai Indians? They could be in the finals every single year without winning a playoff game and it wouldn’t change the fact that they are incredible in the finals. Out of 6 finals, 5 wins. The only loss? To CSK in 2010. That’s classic.
What’s Next?
With just one playoff position remaining and MI and DC fighting for it, the final league matches are about to be phenomenal. Each and every six, each and every over, each and every drop is going to mean something now.
