The India-England ODI at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, saw the hosts win decisive thanks to skipper Rohit Sharma’s batting heroics.
However, a series of questionable management incidents tainted the event and drew widespread attention on the global stage, leaving cricket fans in Odisha wondering if the historic venue will host future international matches.
The lack of proper preparations for the India-England ODI at Barabati Stadium was alleged day before the game began. The first sale of offline counter tickets took place on February 5, and they were all sold out on the same day. However, visuals showed people breaking through barricades, fainting, and unable to escape the rush.
Police also cut down the bamboo barricades to help people and move the crowd more efficiently.
According to reports, tickets were being sold illegally, though authorities were able to apprehend several of the perpetrators.
Floodlight turns of
Following six overs of play in the second innings, the play was halted for approximately 25 minutes due to a floodlight failure. India were 48 for the loss of no wickets, with Rohit Sharma on 29 and Shubman Gill on 17, chasing a target of 305.
The ‘Hitman’, who was in top form, was visibly upset by the development, shaking his head in disapproval. Soon after, frustrated players were forced to return to the dugout until the technical issue was resolved.
After the floodlight glitch was fixed and the players returned to the field, Rohit Sharma appeared to be analyzing the situation and focusing on his strategy. However, he was distracted by the DJ’s constant music playback.
Odisha Government’s Action
The Odisha government has ordered the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) to explain the embarrassing state of the floodlights. The OCA blamed generator failure and transportation delays.
