Millions of cricket fans were thrilled when India captain Rohit Sharma hit a century against England in the second ODI in Cuttack, reviving his form.
Rohit went back in time by hitting his century in just 76 balls, sending a devastating message to his critics. Despite his form issues, Rohit’s batting style was reminiscent of his destructive “Hitman” persona.
This marks Rohit’s first century in international cricket since his century against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup and his first century in one-day international cricket since his 103 against England in Dharamsala last year. Only Virat Kohli (50) and Sachin Tendulkar (49) have eclipsed him in ODIs.
Rohit appeared on a mission after struggling to score even one run in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and losing the previous game in Nagpur while attempting one of his signature aerial flicks.
Eager to disprove his critics. As his future is being questioned, Rohit’s century comes just in time. India have a Champions Trophy to win. Rohit had just started to open the innings for India when they did so the last time, and he made significant contributions. India must win two ICC trophies in a row; anything less will not suffice.
Another bold move from Rohit
After striking, Rohit initially defended a few balls. He displayed his charming strokes, though, and did not let the bowlers settle.
After taking full advantage of fielding limitations, Rohit was once again an attacking force. India reached 77/0 after 10 overs thanks to Rohit’s exploits, while Gill held one end.
The Indian captain accelerated to his century off just 76 balls by continuing his counterattack.
ODIs’ second-most sixes
With his scorching knock, Rohit set yet another record. He currently holds the second-highest number of sixes in ODI history.
Rohit and Chris Gayle were tied at 331 sixes before the game. But when he hit a six off Gus Atkinson, he broke Gayle’s record.
The player with the most sixes in ODI cricket right now, Shahid Afridi of Pakistan, is only surpassed by Rohit (351 maximums in 398 innings).
