The IPL is always full of surprises, right? Just when we thought we couldn’t get any more uncertainty in the Playoff picture, Mumbai Indians (MI) have given us more to talk about
On Tuesday, MI made a huge announcement. With the race to the IPL 2025 Playoffs getting closer (and there are only two games left in the league), the five-time champions announced three huge replacement signings, because if they make the top four (and that is still a significant “if”), they’ll need those replacements as they will be missing some international players. Classic IPL!
Now for the good part: MI is likely to be without Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, and Corbin Bosch – all three have performed capably so,However, it is international duty and they have got international matches lined up. Rickelton, for example, is preparing to face Australia in the World Test Championship Final; it’s no small feat.

So what’s MI’s plan now? Easy. They’re calling in the big guns. Under the BCCI’s temporary replacement rule, Mumbai has brought in Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Charith Asalanka as potential back-up options, assuming they can make the Playoffs. That’s a “when” and not an “if” if you ask any MI fan!
Let’s break this down:
Jonny Bairstow (yes, the Jonny Bairstow) will replace Jacks. Cost? INR 5.25 Cr. MI wants someone with explosive ability at the top.
They will replace Rickelton with English pacer Richard Gleeson for INR 1 Cr. Not much to argue against.
Sri Lankan T20I captain Charith Asalanka will replace Bosch. MI will get him for INR 75 Lakhs.
Here is the catch- they need to beat the Delhi Capitals at home- at the Wankhede, which is painfully loud compared to Capital’s stadium. No pressure! Oh, and they still have to face the Punjab Kings for their final game in Jaipur. How exciting!
To be honest, it has been a ride. Rickelton has smashed 336 runs at the top with MI opening alongside Rohit Sharma and has been a constant, consistent performer for MI. Jacks provided some flexibility with 192 runs and some wonderful wickets, while Bosch, despite limited opportunity, made some noise with bat and ball too.
As MI fight for that last Playoff spot, one thing is for sure—Khel777 is the platform for every turn, every stat, and behind the scenes information. We are enjoying every six, every wicket and the odd surprise right alongside you.
So, what do you reckon? If MI make the playoffs, will these new signings make any difference? Or will the Capitals spoil the party at Wankhede?
