We all know it – we’ve all been there before – sitting and watching a game, eyes glued to the screen, trying not to feel your heart racing when the ball goes to the boundary of the field. But this is different – this is special. Suryakumar Yadav has just created a new chapter in the history of the Mumbai Indians, and that chapter will surely remain in our memories for ages and generations to come. Why? Well, it is not simply because of the numbers, but rather because of the number and meaning behind the consistency, passion, and legacy that he is on the way to create.
Records are on the Boards, Boundaries become the Yardstick
Let’s put it this way – Suryakumar isn’t playing cricket; Suryakumar is creating history. His innings of 35 scored off 24 balls, versus the Gujarat Titans, was not another innings. That 35 was not the highlight; the highlight was he crossed the 500 runs mark for the third time in IPL history in three consecutive IPL seasons, something which no player in MI history can say they have ever done. You read that correct – third consecutive season. Even the great Sachin Tendulkar could not do that for MI.
Just think about this moment, you are sharing the same cricket field with cricket greats Sachin and Quinton de Kock and able to advance beyond their milestones – and that’s exactly what Surya is able to do. Currently that pack of players has grown and Surya Yadav is at the top of the IPL 2025 run scales with 510 scored off 12 matches. Surya Yadav’s average is sitting at 63.75, and get this, his strike rate is a whopping 170+. He is not just accumulating runs on the board but showing stylish boundary play, at times, boundary after boundary.

Also, if that wasn’t enough in this season thus far, Suryakumar Yadav has scored in excess of 25 runs in every one of his game’s thus far this season – which no player has been able to duplicate or come close to this IPL season – that’s 12 games in a row. Out of the game, every time he continues his innings, you can assure yourself, he has a rampage to build on. And, along with this innings of scores, he’s done it in that very same aggressive way of play that we all love to witness.
To put this analogy in context, it’s like your favorite chef preparing the perfect dish everytime – regardless of whether you have tough parameters regarding the dish to include or grow upon.
The Career Suryakumar Yadav has Possessed to Capitalize upon the Growth
It’s easy to forget Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t a pure talent of consistency, initially. Let’s rewind – all the way back to 2023 – which seems like a long ways back – but in fact in 2023 he had his best in history IPL season of all-time with 605 runs amassed in 16 matches with a strike rate of 181+ or better. I don’t think many players can also say they combined a century and five fifties also into their best season. Suryakumar Yadav can. And now in IPL 2025, he has continued the path of successful trajectories and continues to accumulate runs to set new yardsticks and boundaries.
What does this look like? What about being the Orange Cap winner in 2010 with Sachin’s 618 runs? Or in 2019, de Kock was the first MI player to have two consecutive seasons of 500+ runs in IPL history? But now Suryakumar Yadav has gone beyond them both – and he just started this journey.
What lies ahead for Surya?
As MI faithful, we’ve seen the good times and bad, but this looks to be the beginning of something really special. Surya is a consistent contributor and has given MI another dimension to its game, and with the playoffs closer than ever for this team, we are left to ponder: Can Surya take MI to another title?
